I'm pretty sure I have spoken with every single child at Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School. I know what books they are reading and their favorite Paw Patrol episodes. Older students have shared details about their experience at overnight camp, their love for a specific class, and ideas they feel might make their beloved school even better. I have played full-court basketball with middle schoolers and held a couple of dance parties in younger grades. Engaging with children by joining them in the things they love is among the most rewarding parts of my job.
It is this joyful engagement with your children that allows me to build a trusting and respectful relationship with each of them, and when I do so, I purposefully model how to treat others with kindness and kavod (respect).
A March 2018 report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that “the sheer amount of language, the number of adult words, was not related to brain activation or verbal skills,” but rather to the “amount of back-and-forth conversation between children and adults. We think this research finding suggests, instead of talking at or to your child, you really need to talk with your child to have meaningful brain development and language development” (Hechinger Report, 2018).
Our children can become their best when we thoughtfully interact with them, and I’m sure you agree that those interactions are meaningful to us, as well.
When my children were young, I was interested to know what they were doing all day at school. I am sure you must be, too.
I always felt that car drives were a great time for conversation, free of the distractions of technology. It’s even more powerful in Middle School, when kids appreciate the ability to share without the need for eye contact.

Just like all of us, your child may not want to share a play-by-play of their day. Instead, simple questions and relaxed opportunities for talking seem to work best. Give these prompts a try:

What made you smile today?

Can you share an example of kindness you saw today?

What did you do that was creative?

Who did you talk with at lunch? What did you talk about?

Tell me something you know today that you didn't know yesterday.

What was the most difficult rule to follow today?

If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?

What made your teacher smile today?

What kind of person were you today?

I hope as we roll through this school year, you will communicate often with your children about their strengths and opportunities for growth. I hope, too, that you will communicate with their teachers and with me about your concerns and areas where you feel pride.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to interact with your children every day. I feel so very fortunate!

Shalom! I’m Alma, and I’m so excited to be the Shinshinit at Mirowitz this year. I postponed my army service so I could bring Israel to your children. I have so much to share about Israeli music, food, holiday celebrations, culture…and am excited to learn from them, too! I hope that by the time the year is over, they will think of me as their Israeli Big Sister.

This week, I introduced your kids to a playlist of my favorite songs, and taught them a fun Israeli dance. I’ll be sharing photos and videos on the Shinshinit Instagram page. Follow me at stl.shinshinim.

I hope to meet all of you soon!

B'ahavah,

Alma

Mirowitz students learn to explore each Jewish holiday through the lens of our school’s core values. Rosh HaShanah is for tikkun (repair).

The sound of the shofar we hear leading up to and during Rosh Hashanah, the symbolic foods we eat, even the liturgy of the service are meant to wake us up, to break us down, and to encourage us to think about how we reconstruct ourselves in the new year. About any conflict, we are to ask ourselves "What is my responsibility for it? How am I complicit in it? How can I prevent it from happening again?" (Rabbi Alan Lew)
pbloom@mirowitz.org
Here's a family activity to help you prepare for Rosh Hashanah. Print out the Mirowitz core values poster. Cut it into colored strips, and ask your children to arrange the values in ascending order:

• What’s most important at school?
• What’s most important in our family?

• Which of these is most important for building a relationship with G*d?

• Which do you think are most important to our world right now?

• Which of these were you best at practicing this year?

• Which of these feel most important for you to work on in the coming year?

Take a picture of your work and post it the Mirowitz PTO page. Be sure to caption it with a brief description of the question that drove your arrangement of cards.

Shabbat Shalom!

Ryan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes about three years ago. For him, something as simple as a playdate is complicated because Ryan's parents Michelle and Corey have to monitor his sugars and make sure the host understands that pizza and popcorn have a greater impact on blood sugar than ice cream.

Please join Ryan and his family in the walk for the cure diabetes on October 16.

Hallel Arnow is collecting period supplies (maxi-pads with wings, thin pads with wings, super tampons and regular tampons) for her bat mitzvah project. A collection box is in the lobby. Hallel, you are our hero!
Mirowitz 4th graders have organized a marker recycling drive! If you have any dried up markers at home, you may drop them in the box outside their classrooms.
Wondering what is compostable and what is not? Just ask the Mirowitz 1st graders! They gave a presentation about composting at Kabbalat Shabbat today.

Our Parent In Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the start of the flowering of our redemption. Shield it with Your love. Spread over it the shelter of Your peace, Guide its leaders and advisors with Your light and Your truth.  Establish for them Your good counsel.  Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land.  Cause them to inherit, our God, deliverance. Place the crown of victory upon them.  Give the land peace and everlasting joy to its inhabitants.
