If you don’t succeed on the first try…well, that’s actually a good thing. It means you are being challenged to think, to reconsider and to try something new. Mirowitz students have the benefit of learning the principles of engineering design — something we never talked about when I was a child.
You should have seen our first graders tossing eggs down a flight of stairs recently. The “egg drop” required that each student create a container to keep their egg safe during its descent and landing.

Some of their designs worked. Some didn’t.

Our fifth graders are beginning to study Rube Goldberg machines — contraptions intentionally designed to perform a simple task through the chain reaction of one simple machine triggering the next. They will be planning and building their own machines to culminate a unit on physics.

And middle school students recently had to design a structure that could withstand an earthquake. It had to hold 250 grams of weight and be 36 centimeters tall. A few survived. Many did not.
All of these projects, which become increasingly sophisticated as our kids grow, require the process of naming the problem, conducting research, designing, testing, reiterating and repeating.
We often associate engineering design with STEAM projects that involve science, technology, engineering, art and math. But design thinking helps students even in subject areas that don’t integrate all the topics.
We know our students are tapping into their imagination and problem solving skills when they DON’T get all the answers right on the first try. As a bonus, they also learn to persevere.

As a mom of two Mirowitz alumni, both of whom entered the field of engineering, I can attest to the importance of this kind of training. Children who experience problem solving that requires multiple iterations grow in their self-confidence. They are able to tolerate failure, develop tenacity, and to think creatively. At Mirowitz, we teach our students that FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning. It’s our hope that our students will grow up to have all the tools for success in life, and our approach to design thinking sets them on that path.

Shabbat Shalom,

Morah Cheryl

Fresh off the plane from a two-week trip to Israel, eighth-graders returned to school Wednesday with stories to tell. In a “press conference” for the rest of the student body, they responded to a barrage of questions from younger students.

Check out pictures, videos and their blog here!
What is your favorite memory: At Kfar Kedem, we dressed up as people from the time of the Mishnah in the second century. We learned about harvesting and threshing wheat, rode donkeys and made really good pita. (AJ)
What is something new that you experienced? In Tel Aviv, we went surfing. I quickly learned the importance of balance!  On my first try, I fell back into the water, but I got up and tried again.  (Michael)
How did you feel connected to God in Israel? On Shabbat, there are no cars driving and some streets are blocked off. That was really meaningful because it gets everyone in the spirit of Shabbat and that brings everyone closer to God. (Jacob)
Any advice for students who will be on this trip in the future: Don't look down while you are walking or you may miss something important. There is so much  see. (Sydney)

Our 4th-5th grade baseball team remains undefeated after an 11-7 win in league play on Sunday. Max had a pair of home runs and Jonah excited the team with an inside-the-park home run.  Gabe and Sammy combined on the mound for the win. The team improves to 4-0!

Our 1st grade boys baseball team had a pair of games last week.  On Sunday, the team won 30-19, but on Tuesday the team dropped their first game of the season with a 21-18 loss.  The team struggled defensively for the first time this season, but have really improved offensively.

Our Middle School team will play one final game on Thursday afternoon against Brittany Woods middle school in University City.

Our hearts are with our Mirowitz families who have relatives in Ukraine, and who have already suffered losses. Our concern for the Jews in Ukraine, in Russia, and all over the world continues to rise as we are brought back to darker times of war and division.

May God who makes peace in the heavens bring peace upon us, upon all Israel and all the world.

Check out the lettuce and radishes Mirowitz Middle Schoolers grew and harvested from their Tikkun Garden. Chef AJ will be serving them for lunch next week. It just doesn’t get any more local or organic that this...plus studies show that children who grow their own veggies are far more likely to eat them.
Our Vaad Chessed collected more than 1000 food items for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry! Thanks to all of you who contributed cans as part of our Teacher Raffle.

Our Parent In Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the start of the flowering of our redemption. Shield it with Your love. Spread over it the shelter of Your peace, Guide its leaders and advisors with Your light and Your truth.  Establish for them Your good counsel.  Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land.  Cause them to inherit, our God, deliverance.
