After watching the terrifying events unfold at Congregation Beth Israel in Fort Worth last weekend, the entire staff at Mirowitz is renewed in our passion for instilling Jewish pride and identity in the next generation. We are deeply committed to giving your children the very best, but our passion did not make this week of Omicron any easier.

We hope you didn’t even notice, but we had 8 or 9 staff members out every day this week with quarantines or isolation, and only 1 substitute available on some of those days. The pandemic has created a national staffing crisis, and Mirowitz has not been immune (literally or figuratively).

So...excuse me while I give the teachers and staff a shout out.

The educators and staff who join the Mirowitz team share certain qualities. They love children. They love collaborating with smart, passionate colleagues. They love building community and being part of one. They love seeing the satisfaction children feel when they learn something new. They love igniting a flame of curiosity in a child. They love navigating through and finding solutions to tricky academic and social situations. And they love being your partners in raising your children.

And yet, everything is harder with this Omicron wave. They still love ALL those things, but it’s challenging to do even your dream job during a pandemic.

So...excuse me while I give them a shout out!

Thank you, teachers, for doing what you do best…in brand new KN95s! Thanks for delaying your desire to take a sip of coffee or munch on a snack so you don’t unmask when children are present.

Thank you to our office staff, admin team and specialists for covering classes, spotting each other for bathroom breaks, teaching subjects out of your comfort zone.

Thank you for showing up, even after watching a terrorist event unfold on TV, even when you are worried about getting sick and passing it to your own family members. You know that in-person learning is more effective. You have all exceeded your job descriptions this week...helping in ways you never imagined you'd be needed.

It’s clear that you believe so deeply in this holy work, that you pivot as needed and give it your all. You make Mirowitz possible, and the community is grateful beyond measure.

לבריאות (to your health),

Cheryl

At Mirowitz, our enthusiasm for Tu BiShvat (the 15th of the Jewish month of Shevat, and the new year for the trees) burns hot despite sub-freezing temperatures this week. Your children read books about the holiday, about environmental stewardship and about trees. Many students took home resources to lead their own Tu BiShvat Seders

Middle schoolers learned about the many historical layers of Tu BiShvat. They can tell you how early rabbis of our tradition used this holiday time to construct a social safety net for the poor; how kabbalists used it as a vehicle for repair of our personal character and relationship with G*d, often through a seder; how early Zionists introduced the ritual of tree planting in Eretz Yisrael, and how in the late 20th century, American Jews began to use the holiday as a time to renew our commitment to environmental stewardship.

It is an honor to be your partner in planting the most important seedlings of all, your child’s Jewish identity and joyful Jewish learning. Chag Tu B’shvat Sameach to all! May their roots create a firm foundation and their branches stretch toward stars.

It was a 1-1 week for both our Middle School boys and 4th-6th grade girls basketball teams. The boys started the week with a 37-25 win over the St. Louis Blue Knights. Jacob G. led the team with 24 points, and Aiden R. grabbed 9 rebounds. Yesterday, the boys dropped their 2nd game of the season 45-22. Jacob added 19 points and 6 rebounds in the loss. The team sits with a 3-2 record and plays again Tuesday at Living Water Academy.

The 4th-6th grade girls opened up their season Tuesday with a 48-4 loss to the St. Louis Blue Knights, but followed that with a 23-18 win over the 6th graders from Principia. In that game, 4th grader Abby B. led the team with 10 points, and 6th grader Hallel A. added 6 points. Next up for the girls, a rematch at Principia Thursday.

Also victorious last week was our 2nd/3rd grade girls team.  They were winners of their league game on Sunday, 30-20.

Don't forget: it's time to sign up for Baseball. If you would like to register your child for a Mirowitz baseball team, please send me an email.
The re-enrollment process will begin after the financial aid committee has completed its work next week. That means:

Watch your mail the first week of February for an envelope containing re-enrollment materials

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way!” - MLK

More than 60 families did just that Monday at our MLK Drive Thru! They sang MLK-inspired songs, celebrated Tu B’shvat, learned new Hebrew words, watched a skit about hunger, made a group art installation for the JCC Adult Day Care and donated hundreds of items to the Jewish Food Pantry…all without leaving their cars! Thanks to our fabulous partner PJ Library St. Louis, the Kranzberg Foundation, and to the awesome Mirowitz students, parents staff and volunteers who braved the cold to make the morning so meaningful.

Compliance with masking procedures is the most important thing you and your children can do to ensure continued in-person learning.

All parents, grandparents and babysitters are required to wear a mask when bringing or picking up children from school. Thanks for your cooperation and for helping us get through this stage of the pandemic.

February menus and order forms are now online.

Please place your orders by January 25.

Picture the Music!
For the 10th year,  Mirowitz has participated in the St. Louis Sympnony's  “Picture the Music” contest. Our 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-graders created visual masterpieces while listening to Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fourth Movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The pieces below were selected to represent Mirowitz in the city-wide contest.
