What memories stand out from your years in elementary school? The cafeteria food? Recess? Getting caught chewing gum in class?

We asked a few of our students about Mirowitz moments they will always remember. Here are the answers they gave:

Noam B: I love the overnights, and especially the Middle School trip this year! I got closer with my classmates. It's so nice to be away from the internet and have a break from normal life and spend time outdoors with my friends.
Orly S: We got to watch chickens hatch in our class, and soon they will go into the coop! We will take good care of them and will always remember when they hatched!
Marni: I will never forget the 3rd grade overnight. We were doing t'fillah in the morning, and a bird landed on my head. It became our class miracle.
Sydney F: I loved both having and being a kindergarten buddy. Those kinds of things make Mirowitz feel more like a family.
Leora: In 6th grade we went to Alabama. We walked across the Edmund Pettus bridge to reenact a voting rights march and visited the site of the children's crusade. It's really cool to learn about things in the place where they happened.

Mirowitz teachers purposefully plan for learning moments that will become treasured life-long memories. We infuse childhood with Jewish milestones like Simchat Gan, Simchat Siddur, chanting Torah and visiting Israel. We plant butterfly gardens, restore prairies, nurture chickens, sustain ponds and grow vegetables, immersing our students in the world beyond the classroom.

It is our hope that when your children are Mirowitz alumni, they will look back on their childhoods with joy. We hope they will recall profound moments that are connected with learning, with Judaism and community. We hope they will continue to find that learning is satisfying and inspiring, and that the memories they made here have shaped them into the best version of themselves.

After all, our childhood memories have the potential to make us who we are.

Have a memory-making and joyful winter vacation! We'll see you January 3.

Shabbat Shalom,

Cheryl

It's been almost two years since Mirowitz suited up for basketball, and the wait is over. Last night, our Mirowitz middle school boys team won their opener 25-14 at Living Water Academy. Jacob G led the team with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Coached by Joey Mufson, the team has 11 student athletes led by 8th graders, Jacob G, Lucas P, Aiden R and AJ O.

In all, nearly 80 students make up our eight Mirowitz basketball teams this winter. Uniforms will be coming home Friday. If you don't receive yours, we will get it to you over the break.

Basketball games for our youth teams (K-3) are likely to begin January 2nd.  Schedules will be sent as soon as we receive them from the JCC.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteer head coaches:
Lamont Brown (K-1 girls)
Mike Besmer (1st boys)
Drew Newman (2nd boys)
Karen Bogard (2nd-3rd girls)
Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham (3rd boys)
Coach Gary (4th-5th boys and 4th-5th-6th girls)

Thank you to the 75 parents who have shared your opinions with us about Mirowitz and the experiences your family is having this year.

We take your feedback very seriously,
and use it to guide both our day-to-day operations and our longer-term strategic planning as we strive for excellence.

We hope you, too, will use your voice to make our community better. If you have not yet completed the survey, we hope you will take fifteen minutes to do so. To ensure that everyone has a chance to complete the survey, we will keep it open until the end of the year. We are studying every survey, and would like to begin next semester having processed your feedback so we can rededicate ourselves to the commitments we have made to each of you.  Contact Mary if you have any questions.

In order to give returning students and their siblings priority in the process, the deadline for completing your application for financial aid is January 15.  Applications received after that date will not be included in the initial tuition assistance distribution, and will be considered along with new families who apply by January 31. (See more about how to apply here.)

To be considered, you must submit a financial statement form online

The committee recognizes that the FACTS formula may not portray the whole picture of a family's financial situation. There is a text box on the site in which you may write a letter clarifying your family finances. The financial aid committee takes great care to read these notes.

If you have additional questions, read answers to Frequently Asked Questions or contact Mary.

Two things you can do on MLK Day (January 17):

1. Volunteer with your big kid: We would like to have 20+ tweens and teens helping us as magnet makers, actors, crafters and tattoo artists. Does your big kid want to help? Let us know

2. Come play! If you have a pre-schooler, we hope you'll drive thru and invite all of your friends to join you.
During the 30 minute (or so) drive-thru, you and your child will participate in activities that feed the hungry, care for the earth and pursue justice.

Free book from PJ Library for the first 75 families to RSVP.

Free, but time slots are limited.

Thanks to all of the parents of newly vaccinated students who have sent me a copy of their child's Covid-19 vaccination card. If you have not yet done so, you can email it to me here.
Last chance to order January lunches! Please order today!

We may not see you the last two weeks of the calendar year, but our fundraising efforts do not take a break!

We hope you will consider a year-end gift to your child's school. Your contribution allows us to stay on the forefront of educational practice, to remain financially accessible to a diversity of families, and helps us attract quality teachers for your children.

Your gift of any size matters! Please contact Marianne if you have questions, if you need an end-of-year contribution report or would like to learn about transferring appreciated securities. Thank you for your generosity!

Dancing to an African Beat

Your children have been calling out African words and countries, and joyfully dancing to an African beat! Yes...our beloved Mr. Diadie is back! He says "I love teaching at Mirowitz! The kids are smart, and their behavior is very, very good. They welcome diversity more than any other place I've taught."

Check Seesaw for a video of your child's class performance.

Who is YOUR family pilgrim?

First graders researched their family pilgrims — the people in their own families who crossed the ocean for a better life. For most of the students, research has included sifting through old photo albums, conversations with grandparents and dusting off black and white portraits of courageous men and women who lived a century ago.

And to Aiden, Omri, Lucas and Leora who chanted Torah in the middle school this week.

Meet Brett Fox

Relationship to Mirowitz: I'm the dad of 3 Mirowitz students: David (who graduated in 2018), Asher (3rd grade) and Liav (K)

Volunteer duties: Let's see. I've served lunch, built Sukkahs, lead Junior Achievement, served on the Tamhui committee, fixed whatever I could and just tried to be helpful over the years. Most recently, I helped build the new compost bin.

Why do you do it?  If we want  to help provide the best experience for our children and to keep Mirowitz the leader in schools across the region, we all have to  do our part. I also love seeing all the children's expressions of gratitude or amazement. It is priceless.

Fun fact:

I have both a Kindergartner and a High School senior at the same time. When Liav finishes 8th grade, we’ll have spent 21 consecutive years at Mirowitz!

Thank you Brett and Steve Chervitz for your carpentry on our new compost bin.
