"What inspires me?" Students have been asking themselves that queston all week. The Chanukah Tamhui project is about helping others, of course, but just as much, it’s about community unity.
Tamhui allows everyone in our community to be a part of our community tzedakah jar, and encourages children to collectively grapple with questions that have more than one answer. As a Mirowitz family, we come together to learn about heroes who are doing good in the world, to support them with a little piece of our group tzedakah, and to imprint them in our hearts.

We ended the week with Tamhui Math!

Kindergarten and first grade students counted the tokens in each jar...not once...not twice...but three times to ensure accuracy! They did so by grouping the tokens and counting by 10s. Together, they counted 1,851 tokens!
Second and thrid graders counded the coins, cash and checks you contributed, and added them together! In total, our collection raised $718.08.

Fourth and fifth grades divided and multiplied, graphed and charted and announced totals at Kabbalat Shabbat.

Herzliya Loves Animals: $291.34

Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry: $136.58

Jewish Charitable Service: $105.91

The International Institute: $96.99

Earthdance Farms: $87.29

I sure wish I’d grown up with the opportunity to think about such important things at school. Your children spend their days in a place that reminds them that empathy and tzedakah are a part of “doing Jewish”. That is the gift you have given to them.

Tamhui is just one wonderful tradition children grow up with at Mirowitz! Thank you for YOUR contribution to this project and to our holy community.

Shabbat Shalom,

Cheryl

Every year, on the anniversary of the death of our namesake Saul Mirowitz, Mirowitz students write a service in his memory. Their service Tuesday was filled with gratitude and honor.
We were thankful to Saul's son-in-law, Marty Levison, for sharing a powerful story about the Mirowitz's escape from Germany in 1938.

Saul and his brothers, Leo and Carl, were philanthropic their whole lives, and Marty shared that the descendants of these brothers are coming together to be honorary chairs of a campaign for our school!  Here is an excerpt from Marty's presentation to Mirowitz students: "This program will raise a lot of money from the community in order to ensure a future of excellence for your school. This is the first time the Mirowitz families have all joined forces for one cause.  What a beautiful way to continue their legacy.

So, now you all have another piece of information to help understand the life of Saul Mirowitz.  I hope you will all remember his family’s path and make wise choices like Saul, Leo and Carl did.  The wisest choice has already been made by your parents who chose to send you to this school.  Continue to learn, be kind and open your mind to thoughts different from your own.  Be problem solvers, and of course be charitable throughout your life."

It is with gratitude and warmth that we remember Saul Mirowitz every year, and are grateful to the entire Mirowitz familiy for prioritizing our school.

Each day we strive to fulfill their vision for developing a new generation of mensches – children who, like Saul, Leo and Carl, live their lives according to Jewish values, support their communities and use their power to make a difference.
"My teachers weren't only concerned about whether I'd make good grades, but also about whether I'd become a good person." - Zoe
We hear things like this all the time from our alumni, and we heard it once again from the alumni who sat on our Middle School Open House panel Tuesday.

Mirowitz 8th graders typically matriculate into honors courses in high school, and sometimes directly into sophomore-level classes. They know how to self-advocate. They stand out as leaders — heading high school robotics teams, honors societies, school plays and youth boards. They make good friends and good choices.

What's the magic sauce? It's simple. Adolescent years filled with profound and meaningful experiences. It just so happens that a curriculum that involves deep thinking, problem solving, and emotional security also prepares students for academic success.

The proof is in the numbers.
Mirowitz 8th graders consistently have exceeded both public and independent school norms on ERB standardized tests. Our alumni enter college with an average of 65K in merit scholarship. Many of them are National Merit Scholars as well.

But helping your children develop intellectually is not enough. We want them to be smart AND we want them to be good human beings.
Jewish learning opens the door to authentic conversations and becoming the best version of ourselves. We teach our middle schoolers to appreciate diverse perspectives, peoples, places and cultures. We want them to emerge as change agents for whatever it is they care about, and to approach their activism ethically and with kindness.

Don't believe me? Watch the recording of our Open House and get a glimpse of what awaits!

I look forward to one day being YOUR partner in filling your child's middle school days with meaning.

Middle School Coordinator

Thanks to all who have shared your comments and feedback about interactions you or your children have with our first candidate. If you have not taken the survey yet, you can find it below (YELLOW LINK). (Faculty, you received a separate survey.)

Thank you for caring so deeply about Mirowitz!
Paul and Diane

On December 1, you received an email inviting you to share your opinion about Mirowitz and the experiences your family is having this year.

We take your feedback very seriously,
and use it to guide both our day-to-day operations and our longer-term strategic planning as we strive for excellence.

Please take time to complete the survey at your earliest convenience, and no later than December 18. Contact Mary if you have any questions.

In order to give returning students and their siblings priority in the process, the deadline for completing your application for financial aid is January 15.  Applications received after that date will not be included in the initial tuition assistance distribution, and will be considered along with new families who apply by January 31. (See more about how to apply here.)

To be considered, you must submit a financial statement form online

The committee recognizes that the FACTS formula may not portray the whole picture of a family's financial situation. There is a text box on the site in which you may write a letter clarifying your family finances. The financial aid committee takes great care to read these notes.

If you have additional questions, read answers to Frequently Asked Questions or contact Mary.

We could use your help planning our MLK Day Drive Thru! Please say you will!

Let Lee'at know if you will join us for our 1 and only meeting: Thursday, December 16  @ 2:30 in the lobby or on Zoom

Can't wait to work with you all!
Patty, Lee'at and Jen Lotsoff

Thanks to all of the parents of newly vaccinated students who have sent me a copy of your childs Covid-19 vaccination card. If you have not yet done so, you can email it to me here.
Bistro Kids January lunch menus are now available. Please order here by December 14.
Next week, we will place all of the items piled below on tables in front of school. Please look through them for things that belong to your child. Over winter break, we will be donating whatever is left. Questions? Ask Mary.
Mirowitz students or colonial
children?
(You decide!)
Monday, our 5th graders had an opportunity to write, play, craft and taste aspects of colonial life...and to present their research projects to each other and to students in younger grades.
Hour of Code
For this generation, "not learning to code is like not learning to read." This week, Morah Andrea taught your children that coding is not just for IT professionals. Every Mirowitz student spent time learning code. As part of a nationwide "Hour of Code" initiative, our younger students (grades K-2) used the app "Kodable" as an introduction to programming.  Older students (grades 3-8) used the website code.org.

Check your child's SeeSaw for photos of their coding session.

Meet Lynn Harris

Relationship to Mirowitz: I have known about Mirowitz for years, but finally have time to volunteer. This fall, I started volunteering in Morah Julie's  kindergarten class and I love it.

Volunteer duties: I work with children to help them strengthen their written language and writing skills

Why do you do it?  I love that Mirowitz is a pluralistic, egalitarian Jewish day school.  It is a joyful community, rooted in Jewish values that inspires each student to be the best version of themselves.

Fun fact:  I love to sing and dance:)
