It’s not by accident that Mirowitz students celebrate the unique qualities of their classmates. They celebrate the classmate who is wildly knowledgeable about dinosaurs or history, or who has a knack for art or math. They recognize that one peer has a great sense of humor, and another asks insightful questions. Appreciating the ways each classmate adds something beautiful to their community becomes instinctive and a gift that will serve them well, long after they graduate from Mirowitz.
Just as much, they also appreciate when their friends are working to become their best selves. They know from our emphasis on engineering design that mistakes are okay. Mistakes help us know where to invest energy so that we can be stronger.
Perhaps more significant for Mirowitz students are the moments of tikkun (repair) that are organically built into their year. During this week of Yom Kippur, your children have been engaging in deep thought. They each participated in tashlich (a ritual casting away of behaviors they want to improve) and prepared for the meaningful work of growth in the year to come. We each participated in חשבון הנפש (
Cheshbon ha-Nefesh, an accounting of our souls), noticing our cracks so that we can do better and be better.
May the accounting that we each take on our souls this week lead to tikkun, help us heal and be whole, and make us recognize the beauty that we each bring to the world.

Wondering how Mirowitz students know so much about Judaism? Some of their Jewish learning happens during the time dedicated each week to lessons about Torah, Jewish holidays, history, ethics and values. Sometimes, though, they gain Jewish knowledge during math, social studies, literacy or science class.
Take our second-grade students, for example. In science, they witnessed the maturation of pupa into פרפרים (parparim). (That's Hebrew for "butterflies".) They learned about the pupa diet and observed up close the dramatic physical changes as the pupa prepares to morph into chrysalises. They celebrated when orange wings emerged through the cracked chrysalis shell.
As they were preparing to release their winged friends, they shared their hopes and blessings for the butterflies. Then with Debbie Friedman's תפילת הדרך
tefillat haderech (traveler's prayer) and great fanfare, they released 6 adult monarch butterflies into the butterfly gardens.
Our intention is Mirowitz students see the world through a Jewish lens. We hope they will grapple with their own ability to partner in the repair of the world, that they will lead with confidence and make decisions based on their Jewish values.
As it turns out, all of that can be reinforced in a science lesson. See more photos here.

Hi Parents! I am Alison Lohmann, and it is my pleasure to spend my days with your children in PE class. This is my 2nd year at Mirowitz and my 30th teaching and coaching children. I love my job and the opportunity to create fun ways for your children achieve new skills.
My goal is to help students acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Our program is guided by US National Physical Education Standards. Many of the skills taught in class require collaboration, strategic planning and focused effort. We engage in games, individual challenges and team sports that allow students to reach grade level outcomes and physical literacy.
I have degrees from Penn State University in Exercise and Sports Science (B.S.) and French (B.A.), and have taught in other independent schools. I have coached a variety of sports, my favorites being soccer, floor hockey and track & field.
Originally from New York, my husband and I love living in St Louis. Our son and daughter are both officers in the US Navy (Naval Aviators). I am a licensed pilot and enjoy tennis, gardening and traveling. On my wish list: learning to surf.
Please reach out if you have questions or if you love to talk sports.
