Rosh HaShanah is just a few days away, and we — as a Jewish people — are preparing for a year of sweetness. Here at Mirowitz, teachers are helping your children understand that this time of year is an opportunity to pause, pray, to reflect on our behaviors...and to set our intention. We remind our students that each of us has power to build, to spread kindness, and to add holiness to our school community.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that we’ve had an extraordinary opportunity to use that power this week. The winds of Hurricane Ida blew to St. Louis a sweet family whose two girls attend Jewish day school in New Orleans.

Our K and 3rd-grade students enthusiastically welcomed Paige and Tessa, excited that the girls will be a part of our school community for a few weeks while they stay with St. Louis grandparents.

As I write this, Middle school students are at a farm that practices sustainable agriculture, laying the groudwork for their leadership in planting our Mirowitz organic gardens. Among other things, they learned about inequities in access to healthy food due to socio-economic disparity.
Our second graders recorded a prayer for families at the New Orleans Jewish School that was shared at the school’s virtual Kabbalat Shabbat this afternoon. And signs have appeared throughout the school (thank you Laila and Josh) with tips on how to care for the earth.

And that’s just today!

Research shows that Jewish day school grads express an extraordinary sense of responsibility toward influencing social values, helping those in need and affecting social change. In fact, 100% of Mirowitz alumni parents surveyed say that Mirowitz prepared their child to be an advocate for others.  It makes sense! They are being raised in an environment that celebrates their ethical behavior and supports their efforts to do good.

During this holiday, have a discussion with your children about how they are going to live out their values this year. As a community, let’s continue to elevate the holiness that makes our  Mirowitz family a true Kehillah Kedoshah.

Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah U’Metukah,

Morah Cheryl

Once again this year, many families are remixing the high holiday traditions of their bubbies and Zaydies Here are a few resources we thought you might appreciate:

10Q is a website that asks you 1 question a day for  the 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kiippur. You send your answers to the secure online vault.  One year later your answers are unlocked and returned for your review, and the process begins anew.

Kol HaOt Rosh HaShanah Seder These traditionally-oriented and amazingly creative Jerusalem artists and educators have compiled playful ritual resources--deeply rooted in holiday themes and observances--that you can use to add a little pizzazz to your holiday meals.

Keshet--an organization that works for the full equality of LGBTQ Jews and their families across all of Jewish life--has compiled these resources on traditional and creative uses of foods to set our intentions for a good new year.

If you have any questions about these or other resources to add new meaning to your Rosh Hashanah observance, please send me an email. I wish each of you and your families שָׁנָה טוֹבָה וּמְתוּקָה, a good and sweet year.

We know how special it is for grandparents to be involved in their grandchildren's lives. One of the perks of this pandemic is that grandparents can attend grandparent events whether they are in the same zip code or miles away!
Make sure your parents know about these upcoming events. Please also ask them if they are receiving Grandparent Circle emails. If they are not, please let Lee'at know how to add them.

Parents…join me for a monthly discussion about "No Drama Discipline," a book that explores the link between a child’s neurological development and the way a parent reacts to misbehavior.

We’ll get together 9/20, 9/27, and 10/4 at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby. If you cannot attend in person, we will set up a computer so you can join via Zoom. (If you plan to be in person, please wear a mask and bring proof of vaccination.)

We'll start with the first 2 chapters on September 20.

Together, we'll will discuss:

  • strategies that help identify a discipline philosophy.
  • facts on child brain development.
  • the way to calmly and lovingly connect with a child while still setting clear and consistent limits.
  • tips for helping your child achieve insight and empathy.
Send me an email if you have questions. I look forward to growing with all of you!

Why do you volunteer? Our granddaughter Harper is in 3rd grade!

Volunteer Roles: We love serving lunch, helping with mailings and helping Rabbi Scott set up for Kabbalat Shabbat. Years ago, 3 of our older grandchildren attended Mirowitz legacy school SSDS, and we held every volunteer job possible. We are thrilled that Harper is here now and that we are able to come back into the building this year.

Fun Fact: Our niece (Marianne) and great niece (Shannon) work here! It's great to see them when we come to volunteer!
