Do you ever wish your own parents had sent you to Mirowitz? I feel that way all the time, and especially when I walk around the building and see how our students are blossoming as learners. Our constructivist approach is just so different from the approach my childhood teachers used.

This week, I took a close look at their writing samples, and was so impressed by their skills, their imagination and their confidence as writers. |
They have been taught to look for powerful moments and unforgettable scenes. They have learned to seed their stories with their feelings, affinities, fears and interests. They are learning to express themselves the way professional writers do.
Each year, our students expand their skills by writing many stories within three broad genre of writing: narrative, opinion and informational writing.
Kindergarteners are writing “How To” books for their informational writing. Second graders write “All About” books for theirs. Third graders are researching and writing about people who have been “in the shadows" to bring them into the light. |
Fourth grade opinion writing takes the form of letters to their state elected officials about bills going through the Missouri legislature. They are preparing for a special fourth grade milestone when they lobby their legislators about local solutions to global issues such as animal cruelty, and local ones such as voting protocols. Fifth graders write persuasive essays about topics that matter to them: the value of volunteering, the importance of summer vacation, why you should recycle. And in middle school, student are defending a thesis about their literary analyses.
Many classes are currently writing poems for a competition by Kwame Alexander. Lines from their poetry may become part of the civil rights memorial center in Montgomery, Alabama.
Our students are learning to use writing to express themselves, to communicate, and to process information. Most of all, they are learning that their ideas have value, and deserve to be put on paper. Their confidence in expressing themselves in writing is a gift they will value the rest of their lives.

Cheryl

Without the ability to physicially bring prospective families into Mirowitz for a tour, it's been a strange recruiting year, to be sure! Nonetheless, next week, we are admitting a spectacular kindergarten class! How, you may ask, have these parents made this important and life-changing decision? The credit goes to your kids, our students, who are always excited to share stories about what they are learning, what they've experienced, and how Mirowitz has shaped them as human beings.
Since it's probably been awhile since YOUR tour, you might like to hear what the kids are saying: |
- Shauni: You always hear about Middle School having so much girl drama, but we just don't. We are all know each other and get along so well.
- Eliana: We also have friends in other grades. I know so many kids in every grade, still feel close to my kindergarten buddies (who are now in 1st grade) and like having electives with 7th and 8th graders. We are all one community.
- Jordyn: I love that the teachers want us to speak out for change. I'll never forget talking to my representative about a food waste bill when I was in 4th grade. That gave me so much confidence.
- Annika: The overnights are amazing...like a big sleepover with your whole class, only you get to learn important things about the prairie and pioneer life.
- Leah: I feel so lucky to have had teachers every year who really know me and how I learn best. Everyone in our class has different things that help them, and the teachers give each of us just what we need.
- Maya: It's pretty great to be able to learn Hebrew every day! And it would be easy in another school to forget to celebrate some fun Jewish holidays like Purim, Tu B'svat and even Shabbat! At Mirowitz, Jewish holidays are an important part of our experience.
See what we mean! They literally spew that information without my asking! Wouldn't YOU come to Mirowitz if they were YOUR tour guides?
So grateful to you and your children for being our best amabassadors! We can't wait to introduce you to our new Kindergarten families!

When he found out that the school did not have the right equipment for a PE floor hockey unit, Omri knew he had the power to make a difference. He had, after all, been told that by teachers and administrators for all of his years at Mirowitz. |
So he wrote a letter requesting a donation, got all of his friends to sign it, and brought it to Marianne Chervitz, our development director. Marianne, in turn, shared it with a few donors, and the PTO stepped up to foot the bill!
Thank you PTO for the 25 helmets (so far)! And kol hakavod, Omri, for using your power to make this PE unit possible. |

Create a map of a fictional place. It can be an island, a neighborhood, a country. Name the streets, rivers, and oceans. Write a story or poem about something that happened in that place. Be imaginative! I can't wait to learn about the place you have created!
AND...kol hakavod to Isaac B, Maya N and Josh N for making an instrument! Listen to their original songs here!

"Proud of Benny and his classmates this morning. It was his class’ turn to lead Elementary School Tefillah. Each student was assigned a prayer to give a D’var Tefillah and led the prayer. Benny went first with Modeh Ani. It’s great to watch Benny continue to grow and thrive at school!
