When the Jews in Shushan were in peril, they adapted. They cleverly found a way to change the ending of the story. Yes! They were survivors, and in the end, the silver lining of their troubles was the moments of joy that Purim celebrations bring us each year.

During this pandemic, we have flexed a similar muscle. We have adapted. We have changed the ending. We have celebrated many moments of joy! Today was a perfect example.
At Mirowitz, Purim has always been a leadership opportunity for our Va’ad Chesed (student council) and the entire Middle School. They spend months planning a theme, a shpiel and a carnival. And this year, that required joining the rest of the world in pushing aside disappointment, adapting to health protocols and reimagining what is possible.

And...they changed the ending! They developed a Pandemic Purim celebration that was truly spectacular for our entire school community.

The live purim spiel was pre-filmed, viewed by each class on the smartboard at the same time. The carnival became a “Carnival in a Box” with games and activities for each class to enjoy in their classrooms. The Parade was lively and silly...and on Zoom. If you missed it, you can see it here.

Like Queen Esther, they focused not on their limitations, but on their creativity. They used intellect and imagination to fill this pandemic Purim with joy.

And they know that Purim is not only about celebration. An essential mitzvah of Purim is giving tzedakah. Two separate student-led initiatives are making it easy for each of us to perform this mitzvah of Matanot L’avyonim: collecting feminine hygiene products for Gateway 180, and collecting food for Sahi. Our students never fail to surprise us with their open hearts and their creative adaptations.

Prospective parents ask us that question all the time. There are so many ways to answer. We’ll start with the empirical evidence. A national study on day school graduates shows that:
  • Day school grads express an extraordinary sense of responsibility toward influencing social values, helping those in need and affecting social change. 100 percent of Mirowitz alumni parents surveyed say that Mirowitz prepared their child to be an advocate for others.
  • Jewish day school students are equipped with Jewish literacy and a proficient knowledge of prayer. We love that community rabbis rely on our graduates to teach their religious school classes, to lead youth services and to serve as youth ambassadors to their boards.
  • Day school graduates are more resistant to social pressures that lead to risky behaviors than their public and private school peers. (Prizmah study)
  • Graduates of day schools are predisposed to use their leadership skills to strengthen Jewish communities. At a gathering of student leaders at Hillel foundation, 70 percent indicated that they had attended a Jewish day school. 100 percent of alumni parents surveyed say their Mirowitz graduates were involved in Jewish studies and community organizations during high school.
  • Jewish day school students develop a profound commitment to Israel. Our alumni feel well informed about Israel and able to confidently engage in discussion about Israel on campus.
  • As a Pluralistic day school, Mirowitz fosters a value of diversity and the ability to maintain relationships that both transcend and preserve the diversity of our community.
At Mirowitz, all of that is combined with the highest quality of academics and daily discussions about living an ethical and just life. We are looking forward to another fabulous year of raising  children to be Jewish leaders!

We couldn't be more thrilled, humbled and thankful for our daughter to be returning next year.  We are so incredibly grateful to  everyone who loves and supports her each day!

Mirowitz has provided the soil for our daughter to grow and blossom. The small class size, the care and concern of each of her teachers and specialists, and the attention she receives has allowed her to be a successful student.  She has developed into a high-achieving, confident girl during her years here, and for that we are very thankful!
