Self Reflection and Personal Growth

It's not by accident that Mirowitz students celebrate the unique qualities of their classmates. They celebrate the classmate who is wildly knowledgeable about dinosaurs or history, or who has a knack for art or math. They recognize that one peer has a great sense of humor, and another asks insightful questions. Appreciating the ways each classmate adds something beautiful to their community becomes instinctive and a gift that will serve them well, long after they graduate from Mirowitz.
Just as much, they also appreciate when their friends are working to become their best selves. They know from our emphasis on engineering design that mistakes are okay.  Mistakes help us know where to invest energy so that we can be stronger.

Perhaps more significant for Mirowitz students are the moments of tikkun (repair) that are organically built into their year. During this week of Yom Kippur, your children have been engaging in deep thought. They each participated in tashlich (a ritual casting away of behaviors they want to improve) and prepared for the meaningful work of growth in the year to come. We each took an accounting of our souls, noticing our cracks so that we can do better and be better.

May the accounting that we each take on our souls this Yom Kippur lead to tikkun, help us heal and be whole, and make us recognize the beauty that we each bring to the world.

Shabbat Shalom and G’mar Hatimah Tovah,

Cheryl

Finding Meaning in Tishre Holidays

As we reach the end of the Aseret Y’mei Teshuvah (10 Days of Repentance), we move through a holiday cycle designed to bring us through a process of reflection that, if taken seriously, can lead to spiritual social transformation.

At Mirowitz, we teach your children that the intentional practice of Rosh HaShanah can galvanize our commitment to tikkun--repair of ourselves and the world.

Yom Kippur helps us readjust our sense of kavod (respect)--recommitting ourselves to the values, voices, practices, and relationships that deserve more attention than we have been giving.

Finally, the holiday of Sukkot--also known as zman simhateinu (the time of our intentional joy) brings us physically and spiritually outside our usual homes.

We intentionally practice joyous living (eating, welcoming guests, praying, sleeping and learning) in precariously constructed temporary homes, our sukkot.

This year--for the sake of safety and in alignment with county guidelines--we will replace our annual Sukkot family picnic with three evenings of Sukkot fun! We hope you will join us online October 6, 7 and 8 from 5-5:30 p.m. (More information below.)

If you’ve never built a Sukkah before, maybe this is your year to try!  Here are a few well-laid out approaches to construction:

G'mar Hatimah Tovah,

May you be written in the book of life,

Reb Scott

Honor your child's teachers!

You can honor your child's teachers with a donation of $18 to the PTO's "Teacher Appreciation Fund." Your donation and honoree will be announced at Kabbalat Shabbat and recognized in this newsletter. The funds will be used to shower the teachers with surprises throughout the school year.

Want to make a donation for next week? You can do so here.

As an educator, a Jewish professional, and now a Mirowitz parent, I could not be more impressed by this school. It's not only that they are tenacious about pushing themselves to adopt the best practices in education, but that all of the teachers and staff are equally committed to fostering each child as an individual with a good heart and the capacity for limitless possibilities.

When school started, I was so excited to see my friends and teachers. It had been 5 months, and that was way too long. I thought I’d be safe at school and I was pretty much right.

My teachers are still able to make us laugh, and we all still play with each other and have fun…even if we do so at 6 feet apart.
